A large brush fire raged through Imperial County on the night of June 28, 2020, killing one person and destroying over 40 homes. The fire burned for many hours and caused a significant amount of damage to this California town east of the Salton Sea. The Imperial County Fire Department stated that the fire started near Highway 111 and 4th Street in Niland and continued to progress to a four-alarm fire. The town was immediately evacuated to a temporary shelter location with the Red Cross on site. An estimated 40 homes were destroyed by the fire and one body was recovered by fire officials. The fire was stopped and contained around midnight. An investigation continues for the cause of the blaze.
