The San Fernando Valley experienced shaking and strong jolts after a magnitude-4.2 earthquake occurred across the region. The earthquake was followed by several aftershocks which rattled Southern California and alarmed many residents living in the San Fernando Valley area. The earthquake was centered in the Pacoima area but shaking could be felt all over the region. Following the magnitude-4.2 earthquake, magnitude-3.3 and 3.9 aftershocks were reported. Aftershocks are smaller earthquakes that can continue for hours, days or even weeks to years after the initial jolt. Currently, there are no reports of damage.
Earthquakes can cause catastrophic injuries due to flying debris, collapsing walls, or falling objects and severe property damage. Homeowners may face financial problems after a major earthquake due to a lack of insurance coverage or lack of pay from their insurance company. It is important to know the dangers of earthquakes and the precautions you should take as a homeowner who lives in an area prone to earthquakes.
